Gabe Nugent

Gabe Nugent has served as senior vice president and general counsel since July 2023. In this role, he provides strategic advice and legal guidance to the Chancellor, Board of Trustees and leadership across the University.

Nugent joined the Syracuse University community in 2014 as deputy general counsel. In that role, he was responsible for managing a range of complex issues for the University, including litigation matters, NCAA compliance and enforcement and many other key areas. 

Nugent previously practiced at Barclay Damon LLP in Syracuse for more than 17 years.  From 2008 to 2015, Nugent oversaw the firm’s Commercial Litigation practice group.  He was elected to serve two terms as Managing Director of the firm’s Syracuse office and as a member of the firm’s Management Committee, serving in those positions from 2015 through 2021.

Nugent also co-chaired the firm’s White Collar and Government Investigations Practice Area. In his practice, Nugent represented businesses and individuals in matters involving health care fraud, federal and state tax issues, insider trading, securities laws, environmental crimes, import and export control, the False Claims Act, the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, mail and wire fraud, cybercrime, public corruption, procurement fraud, mortgage fraud and offshore assets. 

In 2023, New York State Gov. Kathy Hochul appointed Nugent as chairperson of the New York State Judicial Screening Committee for the Appellate Division, Fourth Department, and as a member of the New York State Judicial Screening Committee.

A long-time trustee and officer of the Northern District of New York Federal Court Bar Association, Nugent was awarded the inaugural Jeffrey E. Hurd Professionalism Award by that organization in December 2025.

Nugent completed his legal studies at Brooklyn Law School and graduated with the class of 1998.
